Only when you let go can you learn to live. Between the death of her mother and pushing through law school without her best friend, it's been a tough year for Becca. Needing a break from Boston, she moves to a tiny coastal North Carolina town for a relaxing summer. After bumping heads repeatedly with a local cop, she realizes her summer will be anything but quiet. Three years after a career ending injury ruins his chance to play Major League Baseball, Gavin has a distrust of northerners and lately girls in general. He wants nothing to do with a girl who is only in town for the summer. When the two give in to their impossible attraction, they realize that they may just have found the key to freeing themselves from the ghosts of their pasts.

The second book in the Clayton Falls series follows Becca and Gavin who are friends of Molly, the main character in the first book. It is a companion novel so there won't be spoilers but reading Derailed first will increase the reading experience. :-D Becca is headed to Clayton Falls to visit Molly and work at a local law firm. On her way into town her car breaks down and police man Gavin stops to help her. Gavin isn't so hot for city girls and they get off to a really bad start. Lots of fighting but also lots of hot sexual tension.

I loved Gavin in the first book and was very excited to hear he would get his own story. But he was a big jerk at first and so rude to Becca. I was happy that this book has dual POVs so we do understand his crazy reasoning and know how he truly feels. After his injury taking him away from baseball his old girlfriend left him and he is scared to open his heart. Becca does eventually bring back out his sweet and protective side. He works really hard to make things up to Becca.

Becca, similar to Molly in the first book, is dealing with a really tragic past. Her mom recently died and she is having a hard time moving on. She doesn't want to let Gavin in but he is persistent and they begin falling for each other. Lots of romantic dates and a few hot scenes. I loved it once they finally began to give each other a real chance. As Becca is only in town temporarily, Gavin and Becca have to decided what sacrifices they should make for each other. Molly and Ben, from the first book, make appearances and Ben's brother Jake is back. I love Jake and was so glad he was such a good friend to Becca. I am super excited that his story is next! Great new adult romance series about getting over your past and learning to trust and fall in love again!

"There was a ticket on the windshield--perfect. Didn't it count for anything that I left it there because I was having sex with one of their officers?"

"She hesitated, and I repeated "please stay" over and over in my head. I had an irrational need to spend time with her. I wasn't ready to let her go yet."

Rating: 4/5

  10. I love when we get the POV of someone who comes off as a jerk, that way we can see what is causing that behavior. I don't think I've heard of these books but I'll have to check them out!

  12. I agree with Sara -- I love it when an author can take a character who seems like a jerk and change my mind about him or her!
